Phu Quoc with Kids: Which Area Should Your Family Stay In?

Phu Quoc is a big island — 50 km from north to south — and choosing the wrong area is the most common mistake families make. A resort that looks perfect on a map can be 45 minutes from the airport, an hour from the night market and a taxi ride from the nearest pharmacy.

This guide compares the five areas families actually stay in, from a parent’s point of view: how long the transfer is, whether the beach is safe for small children, what you can walk to, and how easy it is to arrange childcare when you want an evening out.

Rainy season runs May–October (wettest July–September); the dry, busy months are November–April. The high-season booking rules below apply to every area.

Long Beach (Bai Truong) — the safe default

Long Beach stretches 20 km south from Duong Dong town. The northern end (near Tran Hung Dao street) is the most walkable part of the island: cafés, pharmacies, Dinh Cau night market and a strip of family resorts from boutique to InterContinental and Regent.

Why families choose it

– – Shortest transfer on the island — important with a jet-lagged toddler.
– – Gentle, sandy beach with calm water most of the year.
– – Everything is close: supermarkets, clinics, night market, boat piers.

Watch out for

– – The southern end near the airport is quieter but not walkable — you’ll rely on taxis.
– – No lifeguards on any Phu Quoc beach; keep small children within arm’s reach.

Childcare: the easiest area to book. Most Calibee babysitters live in or near Duong Dong, so short-notice sessions are more likely here than anywhere else.

Ong Lang & Cua Can — quiet north-west coast

Twenty minutes north of Duong Dong, Ong Lang is a string of small coves with boutique resorts (Mövenpick Waverly, Mango Bay, Fusion further up in Cua Can). It’s the “slow Phu Quoc” — sunsets, hammocks, no traffic.

Why families choose it

– – Peaceful; resorts are spread out, so pools and beaches are rarely crowded.
– – Good mid-range value compared with Long Beach.

Watch out for

– – Some coves are rocky at low tide — check your resort’s beach photos at low tide, not just the drone shot.
– – Few restaurants outside the resorts; evenings mean resort dining or a taxi to town.

Bai Sao (Sao Beach) — the postcard beach

Bai Sao is the white-sand, turquoise-water beach on the south-east coast. It’s mostly a day-trip destination, with a handful of resorts and beach clubs.

Watch out for

– – Crowded on weekends and public holidays; arrive before 10 am.

Sunset Town, An Thoi & Bai Khem — the luxury south

The southern tip is home to JW Marriott Emerald Bay, New World and Premier Village on Bai Khem, the Sun World Hon Thom cable car (the world’s longest three-wire cable car, about 15 minutes to Hon Thom island and its water park), and Sunset Town — the Mediterranean-style town with the Kiss Bridge and evening shows.

Why families choose it

– – Sheltered bays, big kids’ clubs and private-pool villas.
– – Sunset Town is the island’s best evening for kids: pedestrian streets, shows, ice cream, the bridge at sunset.
– – Cable car + water park makes an easy full day.

Watch out for

– – Outside Sunset Town, everything is resort-based and prices reflect it.
– – 25 km from Duong Dong — a night-market run is a 40-minute taxi each way.

Watch out for

– – 20 km from Duong Dong, 33 km from the airport — you’re staying inside the complex for most of the trip.
– – Theme park days are long and hot; plan a nap day in between.

Is Bai Sao safe for children to swim?

It’s the shallowest, clearest beach on the island and popular with families. There are no lifeguards anywhere on Phu Quoc, so supervise closely and avoid the afternoon crowds on weekends.

How far is the Vinpearl area from Duong Dong?

About 20 km, or 35–45 minutes by taxi. Most families staying at Bai Dai stay inside the Vinpearl / Grand World complex for the whole trip.
