Avoid these 8 common errors when embracing modern decor

If you love the modern style but need some advice when decorating your home, you’re in luck: we’ve asked a few designers to share the most notable mistakes people make when decorating their homes in this aesthetic. Whether you’re in the process of sketching out your space or just looking to add accessories and finishes, you’ll want to avoid these 8 common mistakes highlighted by the experts below.

1. Not mixing materials

Not everything modern has to be ultra-sleek and hard-edged. Instead, designer Alexandra Aquadro of AGA Interior Design suggests pairing natural fibers with cozy mohair and sturdy linen, set against shiny metals, hard woods, and glass. “This will create a soft, inviting space without losing the sharp modern lines,” she explains. Sara Malek Barney of BANDD/DESIGN shares a similar sentiment, noting that mixing artificial elements with natural ones like wood and stone is crucial.

2. Not hanging curtains

After all, you always need a little privacy! Additionally, curtains bring a cozy feeling. As Melanie Millner of The Design Atelier says, “Skipping fabric curtains is a mistake in modern interiors. They add a soft layer and can be designed with simple sheer fabric to maintain a minimalist spirit.”

3. Not incorporating warm elements

According to Betsy Wentz of Betsy Wentz Interior Design, warm elements include appropriately sized rugs, furniture, fabric curtains, and some color. “Modern style for some people means lots of shades of gray, white, and black, but adding color to a modern home will breathe life into an otherwise bleak environment,” she adds. Designer Grey Walker of Grey Walker Interiors agrees. “A mistake people make is overdoing modern/contemporary rooms, making them overly sleek with hard edges. Even the most modern rooms should have a layer of patina to give it character.”

4. Forgetting to add personal touches

Ultimately, your home should reflect who you are! “I find that people forget to add touches that make the space feel personal and human,” says designer Hema Persad, who runs the eponymous firm. “What often happens is people go overboard with all the sleek finishes and you can’t tell whose space it is, making it feel repetitive and ‘been done before.’ A way to solve this is to incorporate some textures into the space,” Persad adds. “Even in modern design, there’s always room for textures and personality. Think about soft fabric monochrome pillows and throws, and even a potted plant for added greenery,” she shares. “You also can’t go wrong with a silky smooth textured rug.”

5. Not including vintage things

Modern design isn’t just about the current moment; it has been around for quite some time. “One of the biggest mistakes I notice when people lean towards modern or contemporary style is they forget that modernism is a design ideology that has been around for decades,” comments designer Becky Shea of BS/D. “Personally, I love incorporating vintage or antique pieces designed by modernism pioneers.” Willy Guhl and Poul Henningsen are examples of such pioneers that Shea recommends referencing when designing a space.

6. Using matching furniture sets

This is something to avoid, notes designer Lindye Galloway of Lindye Galloway Studio + Shop. “While it’s not terrible, opting for matching furniture sets instead of complementary pieces doesn’t allow the room to have a personalized style with the curated feel that modern design aims to highlight,” she explains.

7. Skimping on rug size

“Decorating in a more modern style can often mean taking a more minimalist approach,” says designer Alexandra Kaehler of Alexandra Kaehler Design. However, in some cases, people take this too far by skimping on the size of their rugs. “You still need a beautiful, large rug that’s appropriately sized for your space,” Kaehler shares.

8. Not contribute to an open and inviting atmosphere

This can be done with shelves and accessories, explains designer Megan Molten. She offers a few tips on simple ways to “cheat” height into any space. “Modern contemporary style is very sleek, but I love incorporating things like tall lamps, candles of various heights, and stands to elevate small boxes,” Molten says.
