Dishwasher Clogged? Try These 6 Simple Fixes

The dishwasher is a wonderful invention that saves time, water, and the effort of washing and drying dishes. You simply load your dirty dishes and put them away once the dishwasher has dried them. However, your dishwasher can only dry effectively if the drain properly clears the water from the bottom of the unit.

If you recently opened your dishwasher and discovered a pool of water (or something worse) at the bottom along with dishes that may not have been cleaned properly, this indicates an issue with the dishwasher’s drainage system. Dishwasher leaks can result from various causes, from food debris blocking the drain to clogs beneath your kitchen sink. Before you think about calling repair services, let’s explore all possible reasons your dishwasher might be clogged.

1. Clear the Garbage Disposal

The first step in fixing any dishwasher issue is to drain the water so you can assess the situation. Typically, we would encourage you to jump in and soak up the water, but there might be a quicker way. Your dishwasher connects to the garbage disposal under the sink. Food waste is a common cause of blockages, as clumps of food and debris often don’t flow smoothly down the drain. So, if the blockage is related to the garbage disposal, the quick and simple fix is to run water through the disposal for a few seconds. If you’re lucky enough to hear the dishwasher draining afterward, congratulations!

2. Unclog the Drain Valve

Dishwasher clogs often occur because the drain trap is blocked by food debris that has accumulated over time. The trap is like an upgraded box that protrudes above the dishwasher floor along the water drain line. Its job is to keep food waste from entering, but the trap or its shield may struggle with food debris of varying sizes. Some dishwashers have their own waste disposal system, but many older models do not.

Reach in and remove any pieces of food or plastic wrap that might be obstructing the path to the dishwasher drain. Be meticulous and use a paper towel for the final cleaning to remove any tiny food particles that may have accumulated around the area.

3. Never Overlook the Detergent Compartment and Dishwasher Floor

Dishwasher detergent is designed to clean your dishes without creating excessive suds, but standard dish soap can produce too many bubbles when cleaning a sink. If you accidentally add regular dish soap to the dishwasher, the bubbles can impact your drainage system. Fortunately, fixing this is simple. Wipe down the inside of your dishwasher and clear out the detergent compartment. Then, run the dishwasher to allow it to clean itself out.

4. Thoroughly Check the Drain Hose and Valve

The next fix is to inspect the drain hose and everything connected to it. Typically, the drain hose needs to be in good condition for the entire drainage system to work. The hose runs from underneath the dishwasher’s drain to beneath the kitchen sink. You’ll see the hose sticking out of the garbage disposal with a secondary hose leading to an air gap in your kitchen cabinet toward the dishwasher.

Run your hand along the hose to ensure there are no twists or kinks, and check the valve where the hose connects to the garbage disposal.

5. Run an Empty Cycle

Here, we combine two tips into one closely linked and reasonable solution. First, run your dishwasher without any dishes on a high-temperature water cycle with a bit of vinegar in the detergent compartment. This helps to address any issues related to hard water in your pipes (and the spray arms, while we’re at it). Similarly, you should run an empty cycle and listen to the dishwasher to see how it sounds. If the cycles make unusual noises or if you hear weak clicking sounds without any activity, this might indicate that your dishwasher is not draining correctly. To resolve software-related issues, you may need to consult a maintenance professional.

6. Pre-rinse Your Dishes When Necessary

If one of the tips above helped you successfully fix the problem, then you’ll want to be more cautious with your dishwasher and its drainage system moving forward. Try to avoid using unsuitable dish soaps, even if you run out of specialized detergent, and always ensure the garbage disposal is clear. However, take special note of pre-rinsing your dishes. A quick scrub and rinse can greatly enhance your dishwasher’s performance. Rinse dishes briefly under hot water to remove large debris or stubborn grease.

One safety note before you finish: a dishwasher runs water and mains electricity through the same machine, so a tingle when you touch the door or handle is a fault, not a quirk.
