Today’s lifestyle often includes unhealthy aspects such as lack of physical activity, harmful sleep habits, and the consumption of unhealthy foods like fast food, processed foods, and junk food. A busy work schedule has increased stress (leading to disrupted sleep), unhealthy eating habits like overeating or undereating, and not dedicating enough time to eat healthily. Other factors contributing to health problems include smoking and alcohol addiction.
The negative consequences of this stressful lifestyle can manifest as illnesses, with poor digestive health being one of the most common issues. This is further exacerbated by the digestive system’s decreasing ability to function efficiently with age and its diminished capacity to handle digestive problems such as indigestion, bloating, gas, and gastritis.
Digestive issues should not be taken lightly, as they can lead to irreversible complications over time. However, there are natural remedies and ingredients, some well-known and used in Indian cuisine, that can help manage digestive problems naturally.
Triphala is a potent Ayurvedic blend of three herbal fruits: amla (Indian gooseberry), haritaki (myrobalan), and bibhitaki (Belleric myrobalan). It prevents gas buildup in the digestive system, improves the peristaltic movement of the digestive muscles, and aids in the movement of food. Triphala also helps treat indigestion.

Fennel seeds, often used as a mouth freshener, have several medicinal properties beneficial for digestion. They have antispasmodic effects, helping to relax the muscles in the intestines. Fennel seeds also help eliminate gas from the digestive system.
Black pepper is a common spice used for seasoning and flavoring. It contains a compound called piperine, which aids in nutrient absorption. Black pepper improves bile secretion, which helps break down food. It also expels gas from the digestive system, making it useful for treating bloating, belching, and other symptoms.

Ginger, a popular flavoring agent in Indian cooking, has a pungent aroma and a warming effect when consumed. Ginger is a home remedy for indigestion, stimulating stomach acid and digestive enzymes, thereby improving digestion. It also helps eliminate gas from the digestive tract.
Shankha Bhasma is an Ayurvedic medicine used to treat conditions like acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It has antacid properties that help reduce symptoms like heartburn and chest pain. Shankha is a mineral mentioned in Rasashastra (a branch of Ayurveda dealing with minerals and metals) under the Sudha Varga (Calcium group). Shankha Bhasma is one of the most important Bhasmas used by Ayurvedic practitioners in their daily practices.
While these ingredients can be used individually or in combination to support digestive health, it is advisable to consult a doctor for the proper dosage before use.
